For the past eighteen years Carolyn has been a RN at a community hospital. As a professional nurse, she evidently knew what to tell her patients concerning their health issues but in her off-duty life, however, she clearly didn't practice what she taught. For instance, she normally drank quite heavily, she hardly ever exercised, she smoked a pack of cigarettes per day, and she was almost ten pounds overweight.

One morning on her way to the hospital, Carolyn got into a car accident. Because the accident was her fault and since her speech was garbled when she spoke, the arresting highway patrolman gave her a breathalyzer test a breathalyzer test. According to standard police policy, when a person becomes involved in a traffic accident and fails to pass an alcohol test, the individual has to spend at least six hours in jail.

Actually, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she had been drinking because she recently went to an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that focused on statistics, issues, and information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: DUIs, alcohol poisoning, binge drinking, and the main differences between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse.

Needless to say, Carolyn felt embarrassed about her car accident. Moreover, she experienced more than a little shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And perhaps worst of all she was feeling quite a bit of shame about the fact that she was driving while under the influence. As Carolyn reflected on her circumstance, however, she thought how fortunate she was because down the line her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.

In any case, Carolyn's disgrace about her traffic accident made her reexamine her life and make some substantial and beneficial changes. First, she was going to quit drinking in an irresponsible and abusive manner. This would obviously help her steer clear of long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to go on a diet. And fourth, she was going to start exercising.

As upset and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire car accident situation, she used this negative experience as a springboard for healthy change. In addition, she used her negative experience as a real source of revelation that she had been neglecting her own health while she professionally told other individuals how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she eventually saw the pretense in her behavior and decided that she would live her life as a positive example for others.
