Richard had an awfully difficult time maintaining a job. To be sure, due to his laziness and lack of drive, he was unemployed far more often than he was gainfully employed. And when he did get employment, he had an awfully difficult time getting to work when his shift started, he characteristically received poor performance assessments, and he called off sick so frequently that he typically got fired a few weeks after he began working.

To no one's wonder, one of the consequences of Richard's unacceptable employment history was the fact that he was almost totally broke much of the time. Despite Richard's less than great employment track record and financial misbehavior, then again, somehow he managed to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner much of the time.

So it came as no big shock when Richard received a fourth DWI. When he went to court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was irresponsible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eleven months in the county jail.

When his time in jail was over, the judge without faltering told Richard that he would be under careful surveillance and would be mandated to take random alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he reluctantly followed the counseling protocol while in the city jail, the magistrate knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never figure things out and learn how to live in a mature and accountable manner.
