A Young Man's Abusive Drinking Results In A DWI And Time Locked Up In Jail
Richard had an awfully difficult time maintaining a job. To be sure, due to his laziness and lack of drive, he was unemployed far more often than he was gainfully employed. And when he did get employment, he had an awfully difficult time getting to work when his shift started, he characteristically received poor performance assessments, and he called off sick so frequently that he typically got fired a few weeks after he began working.
To no one's wonder, one of the consequences of Richard's unacceptable employment history was the fact that he was almost totally broke much of the time. Despite Richard's less than great employment track record and financial misbehavior, then again, somehow he managed to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner much of the time.
So it came as no big shock when Richard received a fourth DWI. When he went to court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was irresponsible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eleven months in the county jail.
During his time in the city jail, Richard was required to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the disruptive effects of hazardous drinking, and he was required to get alcohol therapy. The magistrate underlined the fact that unless Richard receives quality alcohol therapy and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will most probably be spending a lot more time locked up.
Richard stated that he comprehended what the magistrate was pronouncing but he still proclaimed that jail was not the appropriate decision. The judge saw things from an entirely different perspective and proclaimed that it was his professional duty to keep alcohol addicted individuals off the streets who drive under the influence and who get arrested for a DUI. To substantiate this perspective, the magistrate quoted some honored, extensively evaluated alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics and facts that underlined some of the negative consequences that are correlated with hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard realized that he drank in a hazardous and excessive manner, he never felt that he was an individual who was addicted to alcohol. So it was a real shocker when Richard started to experience chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawals around four-and-a-half hours after getting incarcerated.
To deal with his symptoms of alcohol withdrawal in a safe and sound manner, Richard was taken by ambulance to a rehab hospital for alcohol detox and then brought back to jail. While locked up in jail Richard got alcohol therapy but since he got this counseling as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his excessive drinking.
When his time in jail was over, the judge without faltering told Richard that he would be under careful surveillance and would be mandated to take random alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he reluctantly followed the counseling protocol while in the city jail, the magistrate knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive drinking behavior.
As the judge reflected on Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never figure things out and learn how to live in a mature and accountable manner.
