Luo han kuo or luo han guo (Momordica grosvenori), grown mostly in Southern China, had  traditionally been used in China for nearly three hundred years for treating throat and lung problems and constipation. The name literally means monk’s fruit due historic writings of Song dynasty monks brewing the fruit as a medicinal beverage.

In more modern times, it is also used as a natural substitute for sugar. The Luo han kuo fruit extract is nearly 300 times sweeter than sugar and yet has very little calorie content.

This is good for diabetics, those who are obese and those watching their weight. In research, luo han kuo has been found to have high antioxidant properties, thus may be helpful in preventing cancer:

Luo han kuo fruit

To eat the luo han kuo fruit, simply wash it, crack it open with the hand by pressing it in your palm and boil it with water and then drank as a tea. You can even boil it with ginger or lemon to enhance the taste and for better nutrients.
